There are many different types of National Savings products, including:
- National Savings Bank accounts
- National Savings Certificates
- National Savings ISAs (Investment Savings Accounts)
- Guaranteed Income Bonds
- Premium Bonds
Find a full list of products on the National Savings & Investments website (Opens new window)
How do I find out what the investments are worth?
National Savings & Investments will be able to tell you the value of each type of investment. Contact them, giving the date on which the person died, and ask them for a letter stating:
- the value of the deceased's National Savings investments at the date of death
- the National Savings reference
This is what you’ll need to send to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) with your Inheritance Tax forms to pay any Inheritance Tax due.
Different offices deal with the different kinds of investment, so make sure you write to the correct office. Contact details are on the National Savings & Investments website.

How to pay using National Savings Investments
It can take up to four weeks for the money to be transferred to HMRC, so this is not the best method to use if the grant of probate (or confirmation in Scotland) is needed urgently.
