NMW workshop at Individuals Stakeholder Forum - 2 October 2008
'Interest' should not be taxed. Make it clear to employees that they are
not gaining by it. Denise Gaston explained that the uplift related to the
time an employee had not received the correct pay. It was not therefore
interest but agreed to pick up as an AP.
More info needed on NIC's - AP include answer in minutes.
Need to consider the protection of employees - anonymity is guaranteed
up to the point of Tribunal when identity will be disclosed. Is it clear
to employees that they can complain anonymously? Should this be highlighted
on promotional material?
Employee cannot suffer detriment if they complain. - AP need more marketing
around the anonymity of the complaint - the whole process needs highlighting
- people are not aware.
Marketing placed in mosques, community centres, festivals, temples, Job
Centres, NHS - GP's surgeries and hospital waiting rooms.
Go out and speak to people.
Use plain language in marketing.
Use different formats.
One in eight disabled people have access to the Internet.
Disabled can't find employment. Perceived not to be able to do the same
amount of work as an able-bodied person so don't get the same amount of
pay.
Intermediaries would access Internet for info on NMW.
Use radio broadcasts.
Make it clear how much employees should be earning for an average week
- people have low numeracy skills - 35 hour week x £?.?? = .
Bear in mind the age barriers and change in legislation.
HMRC could ask employers to specify how many hours are being worked by
employees - Are we already doing this?
TC system used to calculate amount paid per hour, does it still do this?
Keep guidance simple.
HMRC image works against us.
Does 'interest' paid impact on other benefits? How is it disclosed?
