What is taper relief?

Frequently Asked Questions

Taper relief was introduced in 1998 for disposals after 5 April 1998. For trustees of a settlement, taper relief ensures that a reducing percentage of gain is chargeable to tax. This depends on the number of whole years the asset has been held after 5 April 1998, and whether the asset is a 'business asset'. The greater the number of years you have held the asset from 6 April 1998 the smaller the percentage of gain that is chargeable to tax.
