Class 2 and Class 3 NIC reference checker
When making a Class 2 or Class 3 National Insurance contributions payment you'll need your reference number, which is shown on the payslip HMRC sends you.
The reference number is 18 characters long, for example:
- Class 2 - 110036202016230614 (first two characters are always '11' and the final character can be an 'X'
- Class 3 quarterly payments - 112345678936985214 (first two characters are always '11' and the final character can be an 'X'
- Class 3 deficiency payments - 602345678974125890 (first two characters are always '60' and the final character can be an 'X'
