How much should you be earning?
Did you know it’s against the law to pay people less than a certain amount?
The National Minimum Wage is the Government’s way of making sure that you get paid a certain amount for either full-time or part-time work. Even if you’re a student and work in your spare time, you’re still entitled to the National Minimum Wage.
It changes from time to time, but at the moment it's £3.00 an hour for 16 and 17 year olds, you'll have to be over the compulsory school age and not involved in any apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship schemes to get it. For people aged 18-21 it’s £4.25 an hour, and £5.05 an hour for people aged 22 and over.
If you’re working and you think that you’re not getting paid the National Minimum Wage, you can contact our Helpline. Your call will be totally confidential – you don’t even have to give your name. The number to ring is 0845 600 0678 Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.
