There are two types of student loan:
- income-contingent loans (new style loans), and
- fixed-term repayment loans, also known as mortgage-style loans (old
style loans).
Most people will only have one type of loan but some may have both.
If you have both types of loan, the following arrangements apply:
- both types of loans are repayable at the same time;
- fixed-term loans are repayable directly to the Student Loans Company
(SLC);
- we will collect income-contingent loans if you are an employee or
working for yourself.
If you already have a fixed-term loan and take out an income-contingent
loan to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, special arrangements
apply. If this is the case you must contact the SLC direct.
How to contact the SLC
When contacting the SLC, have your student support number or loan account
number handy. These can be found on any SLC correspondence. Contact details
for the SLC are as follows.
- visit www.slc.co.uk
- call 0800 40 50 10
- write to: The Student Loans Company Ltd, 100 Bothwell Street, Glasgow,
