If you have a job
Your employer will automatically deduct student loan repayments from your
pay. How much they deduct depends on how much you are being paid. You
cannot choose how much you repay, or ask your employer to deduct less.
If you work for yourself and/or have to complete a tax return
You must pay any tax and student loan repayments on time. Normally the
deadline is the 31 January after the end of the tax year in question.
For example, for the tax year 6 April 2005 to 5 April 2006:
- if your return is issued to you on the 6 April 2006
- your payment is due by 31 January 2007.
If you do not pay on time, you may have to pay interest and penalties
as part of Self Assessment.
If you move abroad
If you move abroad you should contact the Student Loans Company (SLC)
on 0800 40 50 10 to let them know. If you do not contact them you may
be charged interest on any repayments you fail to make.
If you are having financial difficulties repaying your student loan
If you have a genuine reason why you cannot pay your repayments, you should
contact the SLC direct by calling their helpline: 0800 40 50 10.
