Students: Coming to study in the United Kingdom

Students from within the European Economic Area

Financial help
All students in full-time undergraduate education may be entitled to apply for financial help with tuition fees. You need to make a separate application each year you are studying and it will depend on your family's income whether you qualify. See the Department for Education and Skills web site for more information.

Students from outside the European Economic Area.
There will be no assistance from the Student Loans Company if you come from outside the European Economic Area and you have chosen to study in the United Kingdom.

Tax and National Insurance contributions (NICs) for students from outside the United Kingdom.
If you do not have any income that is taxable, for example you don't have a job, then you will not come within the United Kingdom tax and NICs system. However if you do have a job you will need to fill in a form P86 . You should check with your Tax Office, use the Contact Us pages to find out which office deals with you. The Tax Office will tell you if you need to complete the form.

If you want more information about how you will be dealt with under the United Kingdom tax and NICs systems, ring the HM Revenue & Customs Centre for Non-Residents Helpline on 0845 070 0040 to ask about tax and NICs.
