Tax receipts, taxpayers, personal tax credit and child benefit

The tables in this section show monthly HMRC tax receipts from April 2008 to April 2011 and annual tax receipts from 2001-02 to 2010-11. The tables also show data on the number of tax payers on an annual basis going back to 1973-1974.

These tax receipts were collected separately by Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise before their merger in 2005.

The data on tax receipts are only for HMRC administered taxes so will not include receipts for taxes not administered by HMRC such as council tax and VED.

The tables contain receipts measured on, a cash basis rather then accruals i.e. at the time the economic activity occurred. Tax receipts measured on an accrual basis for all receipts and some breakdowns are also available on the HMT website in the section shown below.
