These pages are intended to help third party software developers create their products using draft versions of the 2012-13 Self Assessment Tax Returns which can be viewed as they are developed.
Please note: This section of our website is intended for use by third party software developers only.
From 2007-08 onwards, no substitute Individual, Partnership or Trust & Estate Tax returns have been permitted or approved by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). HMRC will continue to approve substitutes for forms other than the Individual, Partnership and Trust & Estate Returns.
Draft versions of tax returns have been updated in line with the timetable (link below). They are available in PDF format.
The drafts cover the tax returns SA100, SA700, SA800, SA900 and SA970 and associated supplementary pages, return notes, guides and helpsheets. HMRC develop the return forms and supplementary pages first, and then the guidance.
These drafts are still under review and there may be further changes to text.
Unfortunately, the HMRC software does not allow HMRC to track changes from last year's versions. However, a Changes Log (PDF 44K) has been produced to detail all of the changes made to all returns and supplementary pages.
The following link will give you access to the latest drafts when they become available.
To save a document to your hard drive, right click on the link and choose the 'Save' option. All these documents are in PDF format. To view them you need to use a PDF file viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. Tip: If you are having difficulty locating a particular document on this page, press Ctrl and F to find it.
A timetable has been produced to give details of what will be produced and when. Although HMRC will aim to provide drafts by the date specified in the timetable, sometimes there might be a short delay in the publication date if the drafts are not quite ready. This will be indicated by a later date in the 'publication date' column in the return drafts tables than the date specified in the timetable. The drafts will be published as soon as possible after the date given in the timetable, and should be available before the later publication date.
The final versions before proof reading will be available on these pages early in the new year. Please note that these versions may be subject to some minor amendments if problems are picked up during proof reading. Any changes will be shown in the final printed version, which will be published on the HMRC website on 6 April 2013.
Software developers can expect to receive advance specimens in PDF format; these will be available in March 2013.
