Requirements for using SET

There is no charge for using the Secure Electronic Transfer (SET) service; however you may incur some initial set-up costs as you will need the following in place before you can use it:

  • an internet connection and a browser (for example Internet Explorer V6 or above)
  • an encryption tool compliant with RFC4880* (for example PGP)
  • Digital Signing and Encryption Certificates from a government approved Certificate Authority (CA) Organisation
  • tools to generate certificate signing requests (for example Open SSL)
  • a single point of contact to work with the on-Boarding Team who will support you through the sign up process

The time required for initial set up and implementation of the service varies from organisation to organisation. You will need to ensure that the appropriate levels of protection are in place on the data to be transferred.

Note: as HM Revenue & Customs have many customers interested in using SET it is important to schedule the installation and testing phase as early as possible. The dedicated team will be on hand to assist you during the set up phase and will take you through the process step by step. For help or assistance please contact us.
