How to pay
Detailed information on methods of payment.
Electronic methods are recommended as most secure and efficient. You will need to provide your payment reference number. This is made up of 11 characters, for example 123456789MC and can be found on each of the completed SDLT forms.
Internet or telephone banking and BACS
Use these payment methods to transfer funds to us electronically. For more information on Internet or telephone banking and BACS or contact Stamp Taxes Helpline.
CHAPS
The CHAPS system enables you to tell your bank to make an immediate payment.
BillPay
BillPay is payment by debit card over the internet. You can pay by BillPay if you have a Switch, Visa, Delta, Solo or Electron debit card.
Bank giro
Take the payslip with your payment to your bank and where possible to your own branch. Other banks may refuse to accept payment. If paying by cheque please make your cheque payable to 'HM REVENUE & CUSTOMS ONLY'.
At a Post Office
Take the payslip with your payment to any Post Office. If paying by cheque make your cheque payable to 'POST OFFICE LTD'.
By post
If you use this method make sure that your cheque is payable to 'HM REVENUE & CUSTOMS ONLY' followed by the payslip reference number. Please do not send cash through the post.
Send the payslip, your cheque and the land transaction return unfolded to Netherton.
Do not fold the cheque or fasten it with paper clips or staples to the return form.
Post-dating
Do not post-date your cheque(s) or completed form(s).
SDLT Payment information for Stamp Taxes Online users
We recommend that if you are submitting your land transaction returns online then you should also pay electronically. Electronic payments are generally more efficient and secure than payment by post. See also Stamp Taxes online E-Channel payments.
