Not registered yet for Self Assessment Online?
The paper filing deadline of 31 October has now passed. If your Self Assessment tax return is still outstanding, you must now file this online by 31 January to avoid being charged a penalty.
You can still register to file your 2008 Self Assessment tax return online but as a security measure, we need to post an activation code to you. This is sent to you by first class post, but this will not now reach before the 31 January deadline.
If you file your Self Assessment tax return on paper or online after 31 January you will be liable to a penalty of up to £100. But if you pay all the tax you owe by 31 January 2009 the penalty will be reduced to ‘nil’. Please note however, the penalty is not reduced in the case of a partnership return.
This existing arrangement is under review and may not apply in future so it is important to get it right next year.
You can register at Online Services – New user.
Avoid the busiest filing times. Why not access the online service?
Due to the high volume of traffic we expect for filing Self Assessment tax returns, we recommend filing between 17.00 and 8.00 on weekdays. Our online service is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
Why should I file online?
- Sending or receiving information online is secure, convenient and quick.
- You can file your return at a time that suits you; weekday/weekend, day/night.
- It is more reliable and efficient than using paper, saving you storage space, post and administration.
- You will get an immediate acknowledgement when you send your Self Assessment Return online.
- The online service automatically calculates your tax and any money you are owed by us is repaid to you more quickly than if you file on paper.
- You can use Self Assessment Online to view your liabilities and payments through the online statement.
Remember: As well as filing your Self Assessment return, you can also pay online any money you owe. Use our BillPay service to pay by Debit Card. If you need information about other payment methods please see our Payment of Self Assessment page.
