Have you registered yet for Self Assessment Online?
You can still register for our service but as a security measure we need
to post activation PIN to you. This is sent to you by first class post
so you will not receive this before the 31 January deadline. We therefore
suggest you file this year's return by paper. However if you register
you will be able to see an up to date account online and you will able
to file online next year!
You can register by visiting the Welcome to Online
Services page.
Avoid the Self Assessment peak
Due to the high volume of traffic we expect for filing Self Assessment returns, we would recommend filing in off-peak periods if possible. The off-peak filing periods are on Saturday 26 January and Sunday 27 January, and between 17.00 and 08.00 on weekdays.
Why file online?
- Sending or receiving information online is secure, convenient and quick.
- You can submit your return at a time that suits you; weekday/weekend, day/night.
- It is more reliable and efficient than using paper saving you storage space, post and administration.
- You will get an immediate acknowledgement when you send your SA Return online.
- It will also automatically calculate your tax and faster repayment if we owe you money.
- Once you have activated Self Assessment Online you will be able to view statements issued up to 3 years ago (to a maximum of 30 statements).
- Use the View Your Account facility to view details of all liabilities, payments and repayments. You will also see when we have received your Tax Return and when your next Tax Return is due.
Remember: As well as filing your Self Assessment, you can also pay online any money you owe. Use our BillPay service to pay by Debit Card.
If you need information about other payment methods please see our Payment of Self Assessment page.
What you'll need to get started
You will need to register at the HMRC website by firstly selecting Self Assessment from the green Do It Online panel to the left of the screen. Select register under new user and then select individual. From the list of online services select Self Assessment and we'll ask you to give us some personal details: your Unique Tax Reference number (UTR), your National Insurance number (NI) and/or your post code.
We will then give you a unique User ID and ask you to create your own password. You will need both of these every time you use the Online Service. We will then send you an Activation PIN by first class post.
When you have received your Activation PIN, you will need to go to the Self Assessment page and enter your PIN. You will be taken to your own personal page.
You must activate your PIN within 28 days of the date on the letter
you receive with your Activation PIN. After that date, the Activation
PIN becomes invalid, and you will need to request a new one.
When you have registered and activated your PIN you will be able to take
advantage of our services:
- filing returns and making payments online
- viewing your payments and liabilities data for Self Assessment (including historical data for up to seven years).
