Thirty new taskforces to tackle tax evasion (Opens new window)
Thirty new taskforces to crack down on tax dodgers will be launched by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in 2012/13.

The taskforces will target specific business sectors in specific locations where there is evidence of tax evasion. The likely targets include:

  • the rag trade
  • the motor trade
  • indoor and outdoor markets

HMRC issues tax returns penalties (Opens new window)
850,000 penalties for late tax returns will be issued over the next fortnight, 550,000 fewer than the same time last year, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) announced today.

Letters containing the £100 late-filing penalties are being sent to people who failed to send their 2010/11 Self Assessment returns to HMRC on time.

Alcohol smuggling gang jailed for £50m fraud (Opens new window)
A criminal gang has been jailed for one of the biggest ever alcohol smuggling frauds uncovered in the UK.

The scam was worth £50m a year in unpaid duty and VAT which allowed the gang members to spend recklessly on high performance cars and luxury properties throughout Europe.

The UK Government’s groundbreaking tax agreement with Liechtenstein - the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility (LDF) - which has ensured the UK receives its fair share of tax revenues from UK taxpayers with investments in the principality, has been consolidated today with the initialling of a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA).

The review has found clear evidence that it is effective in improving record-keeping practices in smaller businesses. However, it recommends that the checks are more targeted in future, linking to available education and support.
