Reference checkers

You need to give the right reference number with each payment you make to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). This is very important because if you use the right reference number your payment will reach your account quickly and you won't receive unnecessary payment reminders.

HMRC references are a set length and are structured to be unique to each customer. For some taxes references are also unique for each period you are paying.

You can check that your HMRC reference number is in the right format before making a payment to HMRC. Select the type of payment you wish to make from the list below and then follow the instructions.

Please note that these reference checkers only confirm that the characters are in the correct format to allow your payment to go direct to your account.
