The Inland Revenue National Insurance Office (NICO) safeguards and maintains accurate National Insurance accounts.

We provide information and services in line with legislative requirements and in support of the Department Work & Pensions (DWP) Contributory Benefits services.

As part of the IR's wider Service Delivery Team, we work closely with IR Local Services, Large Business Office, Share Pensions Savings Schemes Office and all the National Business Streams. We have strong links with DWP in delivering our services to them and looking after our shared customers.

We aim to be:

On an annual basis NICO:

  • maintains over 65 million National Insurance accounts;
  • updates over 40 million individual National Insurance accounts;
  • processes more than 53 million End of Year notifications;
  • deals with 1.4 million employers, 3 million self-employed and 5.7 million personal pension accounts;
  • collects £3.5 billion in National Insurance; and
  • employs over 4,600 staff.
