HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is making changes to the way they handle incoming mail for enquiries into customer returns. An article in Agent Update 23 advised that all aspects of the centralised scanning process were going through live testing before the main roll out.
The testing has included a comprehensive review of the impact of scanning on existing business processes and policies. This is going well and meeting its objective to make sure that HMRC is fully prepared to operate the scanning process on a wider scale.
Agents asked that the approach to returning original documents be considered. HMRC would like to reassure agents that a fundamental change to the existing approach is not being proposed. Documents that agents would normally expect HMRC to send back will continue to be returned in the usual way. These include:
