SVM116180 - Case Selection, Handling and Settlement: Practice – Review of Cases by Caseworkers

You should subject each and every case to continuous review as it progresses.

If it becomes clear that a case is unlikely to be settled successfully by negotiation, it needs to be considered as a possible candidate for litigation at the earliest possible stage. It is quite conceivable that this stage will be reached even before the first formal manager’s review (see SVM116190 below). Such cases should be discussed with your manager and, if appropriate, a reference should be made to the Appeals Team to consider how preparations for litigation might commence whilst any attempts at reaching a negotiated settlement continue.

Essentially:

  • Cases should be reviewed by valuers at least every 3 months.
  • Case plans are required on all cases, even when no negotiations are necessary. Notes should be made at the review stage of the issues considered, conclusions reached and action to be taken.
  • Customers should be updated at least every 3 months
