SPM10815 – Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) - When SSP ends

Maximum 28 weeks SSP due in PIW

The maximum liability to pay SSP in an unlinked or series of linked PIW is 28 times the appropriate weekly rate, see SPM10125.

If an employee receives less than the maximum, by even one penny, at least a further complete day’s SSP has to be paid before entitlement runs out.

Once the maximum amount of SSP has been paid, if an employee begins a PIW, which does not link with the earlier PIW(s), the maximum liability to pay SSP is again 28 times the appropriate weekly rate.

The employer will need to re-calculate their maximum liability if the weekly amount of SSP changes during the PIW because:

  • the number of qualifying days changes, or
  • the rate of SSP changes because a new rate comes into effect.
