A new employee who has done no work under a contract of service
when a PIW begins is not entitled to SSP.
However, if the contract links with a previous one, which
ended no more than eight weeks earlier, the employer must treat the
two contracts as one and SSP may be payable if the employee did
some work under the previous contract.
If the employee has done some work under their contract or
linked contract, even for a few minutes, they can qualify for
SSP.
