Set period not a whole number of calendar months

If an employee is normally paid once each calendar month:

Establish the set period, see SPM10625.


  • To give a whole number of calendar months in the set period, round as follows:
  • any month except February: round 15 days or less down, 16 days or more round up
  • February: round 14 days or less down, 15 days or more round up
  • add together the gross earnings in the set period.
  • Divide the total by the number of calendar months in the relevant period, (if this is not a whole number of months, round to the nearest whole number)
  • Multiply the result by 12
  • Divide the result by 52 to give the AWE
