SE23450 - Car benefit from 2002/03 onwards: identifying road fuel gas cars first registered from 1 January 2000 onwards that have approved gas CO2 emissions figures
Paragraph 3 Schedule 6 ICTA 1988, Paragraph 5 Schedule 6 ICTA 1988 as amended by Section 59 and Schedule 11 FA 2000,
You should read
SE23445 before reading the guidance on
this page.
This page explains how to identify an LPG car that is treated
as fuel type B, and so qualifies for the reductions described at
SE23455.
Cars that run on gas alone
Although rare at present, these are all within type B.
Most cars that run on LPG are in fact bi-fuel cars that have
both gas and petrol tanks.
Bi-fuel cars which can run on either petrol or road fuel gas
Bi-fuel LPG cars are only type B if when they are type approved
(see
SE23385), the type approval certificate
shows CO2 emissions for LPG as well as for petrol. To be type B,
they must also be first registered on or after 1 January 2000
(before this date, the type approval process did not provide for
CO2 emissions for bi-fuel cars to be recorded).
There are two main groups of car that fall into category
B:
- those built by the manufacturer from January 2000 onwards to run on both gas and petrol
- post-production line conversions from January 2000 onwards that are reflected in the type approval process.
As part of the type approval process these cars will have approved CO2 figures for both gas and petrol. But it is likely that only the (lower) gas figure appears on the new vehicle registration form (form V5).
