I am suffering from ill-health. Can I take my benefits earlier?

If you are suffering from ill-health and have had to give up work, your scheme rules may allow you to take your benefits immediately irrespective of your age. There are two ways in which benefits may be paid.

  1. If your scheme administrator receives evidence from a registered medical practitioner that you are (and will continue to be) incapable of carrying on your occupation either through mental or physical illness your scheme rules may allow a lump sum and pension to be paid early on ill-health grounds. For further details see RPSM08100070
  2. If your scheme administrator receives evidence from a registered medical practitioner that you are in circumstances of serious ill-health, your scheme rules may allow you to commute your pension fund into a lump sum. The term “serious ill-health” is defined as meaning that expectation of life is less than one year. For further details see RPSM08100080,
