Can I take my benefits earlier?

If your scheme permits you to take any of your benefits before the normal minimum pension age, you may become liable to a tax charge known as an unauthorised payment charge. For details of how this is calculated see RPSM04104000. However, you may take your benefits earlier without imposition of this tax charge if you fall into one of the following categories

  • you are taking your pension benefits on the grounds of ill-health (see RPSM08200070), or
  • you were a member of a scheme before 6 April 2006 which has a low retirement age (see RPSM08200060).
