RPSM05200050 - Members Pages: Contributions and tax relief: Member contributions -overview: How do I contribute

How do I make contributions into my employer’s pension scheme?

If you are a member of an occupational pension scheme of your employer then the method of obtaining tax relief on contributions to that scheme will be determined for you. You will either make contributions from your gross pay using the ‘net pay arrangement’ or alternatively you will make contributions from your after tax pay using the ‘relief at source’ method. Whilst the method of obtaining relief on your contributions from your earnings may differ they will ultimately produce the same result meaning you will receive an identical level of tax relief on your contributions.

If for some reason you are unable to take advantage of these arrangements you may be able to make an individual claim for relief to your Tax Office. See RPSM05101360.
