Authorising practitioners: How do I authorise HMRC to deal with a practitioner on my behalf?

Log in using your user ID and password (see RPSM02306100 and RPSM02306110).

Then

  • select Pension Schemes for Administrators from your list of services.
  • select either the HMRC free Pensions Product link or the 3rd Party Software link under "File your forms and returns".

If using HMRC's free Pensions Product

  • select your pension scheme
  • select 'Practitioner management' under 'Scheme Administration'. You will then be presented with a summary screen.
  • select the 'Authorise new practitioner' link. You will then be asked to provide the following information, without which we cannot deal with your request
    • the practitioner's ID (see below)
    • the client reference, which is the reference your practitioner has allocated to you to use in correspondence between you (etc). If there is no reference, this may be left blank
Your practitioner will have been given a Practitioner ID when pre-registering as a practitioner for HMRC Pension Schemes Online for Practitioners. The ID consists of eight digits. For guidance on how a practitioner pre-registers for Pension Schemes for Practitioners, see RPSM02307075 and RPSM02307076.You will need to obtain the Practitioner ID from your practitioner before you can authorise HMRC to deal with them instead of you. It is important that you type the correct ID in at this stage, otherwise you could be giving permission to view information about your scheme to the wrong practitioner.
  • select ‘Go to summary and submit’.
  • confirm that you wish to authorise the practitioner and select ‘Submit’.
  • enter your User ID and password and select ‘Submit’.

The information you have given will then be validated. If it passes validation, you will receive a message confirming that you have successfully authorised a practitioner. The practitioner will then receive a notification that you have authorised HMRC to deal with them on their behalf in relation to that particular registered pension scheme.

You will not be able to view the authority on Pension Schemes for Administrators for 24 hours.
