CHAPS is the Clearing House Automated Payments System. It is a nationwide electronic inter bank service enabling customers of certain banks to send high value payments to other banks in the United Kingdom on the same day. It is possible to use CHAPS to send payments abroad, but they first have to pass through a parent UK bank branch.
