PSI22.4.3 - Operational Procedures: General Administration - File Weeding

(This archived guidance relates to HMRC discretionary practice before the 6th April 2006. For current guidance on Registered Pension Schemes see the Registered Pension Schemes Manual)

Weeding means removing and disposing of superfluous paper from files.

Weeding papers from files saves file storage space and costs.

Weeded files are easier and quicker to work because there is less material to sift through.

Weeded files are easier to carry and therefore less likely to cause health or safety problems.

And weeding is now an important aspect to consider in the light of rights of disclosure available under the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts. For further information, please see the Information Disclosure site on the IR Intranet.
