PSI5.5.2 - Contributions by Employers: Cessation of Trading - General

(This archived guidance relates to HMRC discretionary practice before the 6th April 2006. For current guidance on Registered Pension Schemes see the Registered Pension Schemes Manual)

Employers' contributions paid to a scheme either shortly before or after trading has ceased are a frequent cause of problems. There are 3 main areas:
  1. Schemes set up when a disposal of the business was planned, ( PSI5.5.6- 11).
  2. An employer ceases to trade but wants an existing approved scheme to continue. ( PSI5.5.14-16).
  3. Special contributions. ( PSI5.3.7-10).
