OT31010 - General Appendix

OT Manual, Cross-Section: Exploration or Appraisal Well

Parts of a well

The well is drilled in overlapping stages which gradually reduce in diameter. Once a stage is drilled it is filled with mud to prevent the sides collapsing, and the casing is cemented in before the next stage is started.

The length of each stage will vary depending on well characteristics. Overlaps will be at ‘hard’ areas to prevent collapse.
