Claimant Would Like To Repay Their Overpayment By Debit Card (AG)

To deal with a request to repay a tax credits overpayment debt by debit card, consider steps 1 - 11 below. The guide is presented as follows

1If you receive a request to repay an overpayment of tax credits by debit card and you
  • Are in direct contact with the claimant by telephone, go to step 2
  • Have received a letter from a claimant, go to step 9

2If the claimant states that they want to repay their overpayment of tax credits by debit card, ask the claimant if they have received form TC610 Notice to Pay which tells them to repay their tax credits overpayment
  • If they have received form TC610 Notice to Pay, go to step 3
  • If they have not received form TC610 Notice to Pay, go to step 4
3Inform the claimant that to be able to repay any overpayment by debit card they need to use the details on their payment slip attached to the bottom of form TC610 Notice to Pay at their
  • Bank
  • Building society

Or

  • Post Office

And

  • They should inform their bank, building society or local Post Office that they want to repay the tax credits overpayment by debit card
  • The bank, building society or Post Office will then use the details on the payment slip to arrange the repayment

Or

  • The claimant can use the details on the payment slip to repay the overpayment by using their bank or building society telephone or internet banking service

Then

  • Go to step 10

4Use Function VIEW OVERPAYMENTS
  • Enter the claimant's NINO in the Key Entry Data screen
  • Select the All checkbox
  • Click on the [OK] button. You will be taken to the View Overpayments screen
  • Check the recovery method in the Overpayment Summary field
  • If the recovery method is cross year, go to step 5
  • If the recovery method is direct ,it will be worked by Debt Management and Banking (DMB), go to step 6
5Inform the claimant that they cannot repay the tax credits overpayment by using our debit card service

And

Explain to them that we can arrange for a payment slip to be issued to them and they can repay the tax credits overpayment by

  • Using their own bank or building society telephone banking service
  • On the internet through their own bank or building society service
  • Using a debit card at their local Post Office

Alternatively they can make repayments by

  • Sending a cheque direct to the Tax Credit Office, Preston

Or

  • Paying cash or handing in a cheque at their local Enquiry Centre
  • If the claimant would like a payment slip, go to step 7
  • If the claimant does not want a payment slip and is happy to repay the overpayment by another method, go to step 10
6Inform the claimant that they need to take a payment slip which is attached to form TC610 Notice to Pay to their
  • Bank
  • Building society

Or

  • Local Post office, who will undertake the transaction

Alternatively they could also use the details from the payment slip to make arrangements to repay by

  • Using their own bank or building society telephone banking service
  • On the internet through their own bank or building society service

Or

  • Using a debit card at their local Post Office

Inform them that they will be sent form TC610 Notice to Pay shortly but if they do not want to wait you can arrange for a payment slip to be sent to them sooner. Alternatively they can make repayments by

  • Sending a cheque direct to the Tax Credit Office, Preston

Or

  • Paying cash or handing in a cheque at their local Enquiry Centre
  • If the claimant would like a payment slip, go to step 7
  • If the claimant does not want a payment slip and is happy to repay the overpayment by another method, go to step 10
7Complete form TC648 with the following information
  • Mark the top of the form 'Payslip request'
  • Claimant’s name
  • The claimant would like a payment slip sent to them

And

  • If the claimant lives outside the UK, add the following

‘International claimant’

Then

  • Go to step 8

Then

  • Go to step 10

9Prepare and issue a free format letter to the claimant which advises them that they should contact the Payments Helpline on 0845 366 1204 or their local Debt Management Office who will be able to arrange payment by debit card
 

Note: In family breakdown cases, only send the letter to the claimant who has contacted us to repay

  • Go to step 10

10Use Function MAINTAIN HOUSEHOLD NOTES and select the ‘Debt Recovery’ category to enter one of the following messages

‘TCMZ Contact from (Enter the claimants name) re O/P. CLMT using payment slip to repay by debit card process’

‘TCMZ Contact from (Enter the claimant's name) re O/P. CLMT requesting a payment slip to repay overpayment by debit card. Request sent to Receivables’

‘TCMZ Contact from (Enter the claimant's name) re O/P. CLMT repaying debt by cheque or cash’

‘TCMZ Letter sent to CLMT 1 / CLMT 2 (Enter the claimants name) giving details of the payment helpline

Notes:

Then

  • If you were in direct contact with the claimant, take no further action
  • If you were dealing with correspondence from the claimant, go to step 11
