Personal Cheque Received For Overpayments - Service Teams (Info)

There is an Action Guide for this subject, click on 'Next Page' to access it

The Tax Credit Office (TCO) may receive a personal cheque because a person believes

  • They have been overpaid tax credits

Or

  • They have been paid incorrectly

All personal cheques received in TCO will be sent initially to the Valuables Team from the post room. The Valuables Team will forward information onto the Service Teams

On the Service Team, you will receive notification that a claimant has made a payment by personal cheque through one of the following

  • A form TC (Cheque) 1 from the Valuables Team
  • A form TC648 from another HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) office
  • A form TC648 with correspondence attached from another HMRC office

Or

  • A form TC648 with a photocopy of the cheque from an Enquiry Centre

Note: The majority of the HMRC banking is done at Accounting & Payments Service (A&PS) Cumbernauld. Cheques are cashed and held in the Overpayment and Summary System (OAS) until they can be allocated to a household record. Any correspondence relating to a claimants claim or award received with a cheque is separated from the cheque and sent to the appropriate TCO office

You must determine whether the claimant is making the payment because

Or

  • They think they have been overpaid. If this is the case, follow the guidance in this action guide to deal with the personal cheque and resolve the overpayment query
