NIM39405 - National Insurance Numbers (NINOs): NINO Cards: What is a NINO Card?
The NINO card was first introduced in 1975 as a manila card to
remind customers of their NINO. It was replaced in 1984 with a
plastic card as this was considered to be a more convenient,
durable and permanent reminder. The card may be shown to a new
employer on starting work or in connection with any business the
customer may have with HMRC or DWP.
The NINO card (form RD3) is a small plastic card, the size of
a credit card. It is red and blue with black and white text. The
main information included on the card is:
- Issuing Department
- Holder’s name
- NINO
- A clear statement on the back and front of the card that it is not proof of identity (may not be on older cards)
- What to do if the holder changes their name and address
- What the finder of a lost card should do
