INS10105 - About the Voluntary Arrangements Service

What VAS does

Inland Revenue

EIS Worthing voted on VAs on behalf of Inland Revenue from their introduction in the Insolvency Act 1986. It has monitored them since January 2000.

From small beginnings the number of VAs received rose to over 5,000 a year. A separate Voluntary Arrangement Unit within EIS was set up in mid-1996.

Customs and Excise

Customs similarly voted on VAs but was not centralised. From April 2001 it’s VA voting and monitoring has been centralised within VAS.

The Voluntary Arrangements Service Unit (VAS)

VAS relies upon national IT systems for debt details and local offices for useful local knowledge. Centralisation in VAS helps to provide

  • efficiency
  • commerciality
  • consistency
  • best practice, and
  • reduce IP’s costs as only one proposal need be sent to VAS
  • reduce turnaround times.
