IHTM38321 - Time to pay: introduction

Inheritance Tax is generally due six months after the end of the month in which the chargeable transfer was made (IHTA84/S266).

Financial difficulty or inconvenience is not normally regarded as sufficient reason for a taxpayer to ignore this statutory requirement. However in situations involving genuine hardship or serious difficulty in raising the correct amount due IHT does have delegated authority from the Board to allow the taxpayer to either:

  • postpone payment of all or part of the tax due, or
  • permit payment of all or part of the tax due by informal instalments over a specified period
