IHTM08012 - The work of TSB: account amendment work

The main role of TSB is to undertake the correction of incorrect IHT returns. This work is known as ‘Account Amendment Work’ and is defined at IHTM29013 by reference to what is not enquiry work. Account amendment work is undertaken on Lifetime, Settlement and Death accounts.

Where the account amendment is the only work needed on an account it is sent to TSB to deal with. The aim is to support taxpayers who have tried to submit and complete an accurate IHT account. The focus is on advising the taxpayer of the revised correct liability as quickly as possible, and collecting or repaying any outstanding tax and interest. It is more cost effective to encourage and enable taxpayers to provide complete and accurate accounts than it is to seek to challenge accounts through our compliance activity.

In the long term the aim is to reduce the number of accounts requiring amendment through the provision of clear and helpful guidance that enables taxpayers to fully comply with their obligations on time.
