EXGG1505 – Introduction: Social law: What are the relevant social laws?

The social legislation controls both persons and their premises involved in the operation of all gambling businesses. The Gambling Act 2005 (GA05) replaced old style permits for individual operating licences which were issued and controlled by the Gambling Commission (GC). Local licensing authorities also replaced the relevant licensing courts when issuing and controlling premises licenses. The GA05 was fully implemented on 1 September 2007 which revoked the following legislation:

  • The Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act 1963
  • The Gaming Act 1968
  • The Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976
  • The Gaming (Bingo) 1985.

The Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements Act (NI) Order 1985 remains current, as the GA05 did not affect Northern Ireland. The National Lottery etc Act 1993 also remains unaffected.
