Decision Makers Guide - DMG39304

Calculation of weekly income from student loans

For applications

  • received on or after the first day of the first year of the course and that this date is after 01/09/00 (01/08/00 in Scotland) or
  • received on or after 01/09/00 (01/08/00 in Scotland) and the student is in the second or later year of the course

the decision maker should calculate the weekly amount of student loan where

  • the student is not in the final year of the course and
  • the course lasts for more than one year.

As follows:

1) determine the maximum amount of loan available to the student (DMG39111)
from the balance, subtract the specified amounts for books and equipment (but only if no deduction has been made under DMG39310) and for travel costs (Appendix 1)

divide the figure at 2 by 52 to give the weekly amount of student loan.
