Mandatory awards are calculated under the rules in force at the
start of the academic year. This is done by the lEA in England and
Wales and by the Student Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS). Some
students have discretionary grants that may not be paid just for
the period of study. In these cases the decision maker should
establish the period the grant is intended to cover.
Year in relation to a course means the 12 month period
beginning on 1st January, 1st April or 1st September, according to
whether the academic year of the course in question begins in
spring, summer or autumn respectively.
