Student loans: Personal eligibility

To get a loan a student must be personally eligible as well as attending a designated course. A student is eligible for a loan if

1) they meet the residence conditions (DMG39104 et seq) and
2) an application has been submitted in the form required by the S of S and that includes
a declaration that the particulars are correct to the best of the applicant's knowledge and belief
the applicant will notify any changes affecting eligibility for support
the applicant will repay any amounts of support that are overpaid
In Scotland, the application must also include the student's UK NINO (if they have one), the most recent student loan account number and the names , addresses and phone numbers of two persons known to the student.

3) In England and Wales any application must be made within four months of

the first day of the academic year of the course in which the application is submitted
if the course becomes a designated course at a date later than the first day of the academic year, the date on which the course became a designated course
if the student, their spouse or their parent become a refugee, or are granted leave to enter or remain, after the first day of the academic year, the date of recognition or the date leave was granted and

In Scotland, the application must be made not later than one month before the end of the academic year.

4) They are aged less than 50 when the course begins, or over 50 and below 55 and the S of S is satisfied that they intend to enter employment are completing the present or subsequent course and
5) They are not attending certain courses in nursing, midwifery, or health visiting and

They are not eligible to receive an allowance under the Nursing and Midwifery Student Allowances (Scotland) Regulations 1992 and

They are not in breach of any obligation contained in a loan agreement and

After reaching age 18 they confirmed any loan agreement that was made while under that age and

They are not eligible for a grant or a loan under the Education Act 1962 or the Education (Student Loans) Act 1990 and

They are not eligible for more than one designated course, including part-time courses and

They have, by their conduct, shown themselves to be unfitted to receive support, in the opinion of the S of S.
