Questions on self-employment: Contract for services


The decision maker should note the following points on contracts
1) a contract is an agreement between two or more named parties to do something
2) it defines the rights and obligations of those parties and each party normally benefits from it
3) it can be

  • written
  • oral
  • expressed or
  • implied
and is legally binding

4) someone may be engaged by another to do a particular job without becoming an employee although the customer has rights about how the job should be done.

Example

A householder tells the painter how and when the house is to be painted without becoming the painter's employer.
