COM1010 - Accounting periods: company accounting periods: accounting period records
COTAX gives a two digit number to each AP, in chronological order of the creation of the AP records. A company’s first AP recorded in COTAX is therefore 01, the next 02, and so on.
Individual AP numbers do not change even if the AP is superseded. More information about superseded APs is available in this section in the subjects
- ‘Superseded CTSA Accounting Periods’
- ‘Superseded CTPF Accounting Periods’
COTAX gives the revised APs new numbers. Because of that, the sequence of a company’s AP numbers does not always agree with the chronological order of the APs.
COTAX gives dormant periods an AP number to complete the database record, but does not display it. If a dormant period is later re-opened with Live APs, the dormant period is deleted from the database and the AP number is lost. This is why a case sometimes shows a missing AP number in its chronological record.
COTAX creates and maintains APs in different ways for
- Existing cases. For more information see subject ‘Established Case - COTAX Creation Of APs’ (COM1050)
- New cases. For more information see subject ‘New Cases’ (COM1100)
You have to intervene in some instances to
- Correct APs set up automatically
- Prevent the future automatic creation of 12 monthly AP records when
-
- The AP end date changes
-
- Or
- Or
-
- APs are regularly of less than 12 months
See subject ‘Maintaining The AP Record’ (COM1080) in this section for full details.
