COM40010 - Case records: setting up case records: company registration numbers

You may, exceptionally, need to set up a record for an incorporated body where

  • COTAX has been unable to do so automatically using data from Companies House

Or

  • A company registered with Companies House before the automatic data feed to COTAX started, but was not set up on COTAX

Note: It may take up to 2 working days for a company registering at Companies House to be automatically set up on COTAX. You must therefore be certain that a case has not been set up automatically before you set it up yourself.

You must enter a Company Registration Number (CRN) for a company with a status code of

  • ‘C’ (Limited Company or PLC)
  • ‘S’ (Society registered under the Industrial Provident Societies Act)
  • ‘E’ (Close Investment Holding company)

Or

  • ‘P’ (Public Corporation)

You can find the CRN by checking

  • The Companies House Website

Or

  • Headed notepaper from the company. (The CRN should always be printed on this)

The CRN is made up of

  • Up to eight numerals

Or

  • Two alphabetical characters (prefix) followed by up to six alphanumeric characters

For further information on the CRN see Company Registration Number Formats (Word 64KB).
