COM23020 - Assessing: CTSA assessments: arithmetical and other errors in self assessments

If you need to use Function RAMA (Record / Amend Assessment) to record a self assessment (Word 28KB), COTAX automatically corrects any arithmetical errors in the figures entered from the Return Form CT600. (This text has been withheld because of exemptions in the Freedom of Information Act 2000).

COTAX displays a screen with

  • The figures entered from the return displayed in blue on the left side You cannot change them

And

  • The figures calculated by COTAX displayed in black on the right side of the screen. These are the figures you can change

If COTAX has corrected an arithmetical error, the figure is highlighted in magenta.

You can change entries or make new ones using the [Amend] button. Full details are included in the COTAX Online Help (COSH).

COTAX will not let you enter a figure which

  • Is arithmetically incorrect

Or

  • Does not comply with its validation rules

For example, if you attempt to change the Financial Years so that they are not correct for the AP, COTAX will change your figures to the correct ones and redisplay them to you using the appropriate colour combination (Word 28KB).

If you try to enter a figure for Marginal Rate Relief and COTAX calculates that it is not due, it will remove the figure without highlighting the change

You may want to record the company’s self assessment as captured from the return

(This text has been withheld because of exemptions in the Freedom of Information Act 2000)
  • Where its calculation is correct
    • But, for example, COTAX refers to the Lower Relevant Maximum Amount and ‘corrects’ the tax rate to the small companies rate when the case is a close investment holding company within Section 13A ICTA 1988 and therefore liable at the full CT rate

Provided the figure you enter is the correct format (a whole number or a decimal as appropriate), COTAX allows you to replace its recalculated figure but highlights the entry in green.
