COM20040 - Assessing: CT pay and file assessments: assessment references
Each version of an assessment, (main, amended or further), has a unique reference. This reference number appears in the format 99/99. The first part is the assessment number and the second part the version number.
COTAX allocates a unique number to the first assessment for each AP. In addition, it gives a version number to each assessment for that AP.
COTAX gives the first assessment you make for a company the number 01/01. The assessment number increases by one for the first assessment made for each successive AP, and the cycle of version numbers recommences for each AP.
Example
AP 01/01/93 to 31/12/93 is AP 01

If you make an estimated assessment before you know the true AP dates you may need to amend the dates when you establish the correct APs. When you amend them in COTAX, you will need to relate the superseded AP to the new correct AP. For more information see business area ‘Accounting Periods’.
The assessment number given to the estimated assessment is retained as the assessment number for the new, correct AP.
Example
The normal method of numbering assessments for CT Pay and File APs applies, even when a superseded assessment is involved.
