How does a contractor get to use EDI?

To make use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), a contractor must be registered with the Electronic Business Unit (EBU).

To register, a contractor can use one of the following

1. Email - the EDI Registration Form needs to be downloaded by accessing the following site www.hmrc.gov.uk/ebu/edi/cis_intro. After completion, the form is then emailed as an attachment to helpdesk@hmrc-efile.gov.uk the downloaded and completed form can also be faxed to EBU on 01274 534618, or
   
2. Post - the downloaded and completed form can be sent by post to

Following registration, a representative from the unit will contact the applicant to discuss what happens next and the way forward.

How does a contractor register for CIS online services?

If you are asked how a contractor registers or gets to use CIS online services to file monthly returns, you should direct them to the CIS online website. The address for this is www.hmrc.gov.uk. From there the contractor should select CIS online from the 'do it online' section and follow the on screen instructions.

To register for CIS online contractors will need both their PAYE scheme reference and their Accounts Office reference.
