CCM6760 - Particular Aspects: Work & Hours - Self-employed Claimants - Information in support of claims
The information you will need, to decide whether the claimant is engaged in remunerative work, will vary from case to case. Remember you will be looking for indications that the activity is:
- developed
- organised
- regular
- carried out in expectation of payment.
Some of the information sources you may find useful are:
- diaries, which you could expect to detail work appointments, business travel, phone calls or meetings to discuss possible outlets for the goods, etc
- summaries of orders, or payments received for products
- summaries of orders, or payments for raw materials
- copies of advertisements
- copies of estimates for work
- lists of customers' names and addresses
- correspondence with literary or other agents.
Remember, you will not be examining any records to form an opinion of the income the claimant has reported, but to decide whether they support the claim that s/he is engaged in remunerative work. So you will be looking for patterns of behaviour and indications of an organised, profit- seeking approach.
