Job Profiles - Tax
Alan Chambers
I joined the Department at 19, not really expecting to stay, yet here I am many years later as a senior tax inspector. I started as an Administrative Assistant, but I knew I could go even further, so applied to join the development programme which trains you to become a tax inspector. I progressed from dealing with the tax affairs of small traders and partnerships to large companies. I now work in Local Compliance in our Large & Complex Business Stream, dealing with some of the UK’s largest and most significant businesses.
My work primarily involves reviewing the accounts submitted by a business and conducting research to assess the level of risk associated with a particular issue or transaction. This might sound very dry, but it’s not. We meet regularly with the businesses we cover to discuss progress and widen our commercial awareness. It’s definitely a job for people interested in finding out how businesses function.
