What does this involve?
As well as recruiting future senior managers through our Graduate development programme, many also began their careers at Officer level, which is our first management level. If you are an ambitious individual with leadership qualities, this is the ideal place to start.
There are several grades:
- Officer.
- Higher Officer.
- Senior Officer.
Officers work throughout our business, so there are many opportunities to specialise.
Wherever you are based, you can expect challenging work and opportunities to develop your career. You might get the opportunity to:
- lead a team of administrative staff, helping them manage their workloads and developing their skills
- work directly with the public in 'casework', where you will deal with the more complex personal tax affairs of company directors or people running their own business
- help us track down and investigate anyone who tries to avoid paying tax or falsely claims credits.
Most of our Officer level staff are able to enjoy flexible working which means you can vary your start and finish times provided you work your set number of hours. This is especially useful if you have commitments outside work, eg dropping children at school.
What are the career prospects?
Once you’ve passed your probation, you can apply for any posts in
higher grades as long as you meet the criteria of the post being advertised
and your manager supports your application.

What is the pay?
Officers start at £19,587. You must perform satisfactorily during the first year in order to qualify for a salary increase. From then onwards,roviding your performance is satisfactory you move up our pay scales.
What qualifications or qualities are needed to apply?
When filling these posts, we look for people who can demonstrate leadership potential and work well with others.
If you have the qualifications listed below and are successful in an application sift and a work test, you will be offered an interview.
If you don’t have the qualifications, we will give you a short test to make sure that you are suitable for this work before you go through the rest of our selection process.
You need two ‘A’ levels at A-E and three GCSE passes (or equivalent) at A-C or 2 Higher Grades at A-C pass and three Ordinary grades at A-C pass (or equivalent) in Scotland.
